Spain beat Netherlands to Win World Cup

Octopus Paul right once again

Spain won their first ever FIFA World Cup, courtesy of a late goal from midfielder Andres Iniesta who hammered an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg in the final minutes of play. Netherlands have earlier lost the 1974 and 1978 finals.

During the two hours of play, a dozen yellow cards were issues, and a red card against the Dutch team. "It's incredible," said Iniesta. "What a joy especially when you see how we won it. There aren't the words to describe what I am feeling. After my goal, I thought about my family and all the people who I love. But the victory is the fruit of a lot of work."

Spanish substitute Cesc Fabregas played a superb ball which split the Dutch defence and Iniesta made no mistake from six yards out to send the Spanish fans into raptures.
